We’re teaming up with our friends at the Bluestocking Club to bring you a preview screening of On Chesil Beach, based on Ian McEwan’s Man Booker Prize-nominated book of the same name. The film will be followed by an exclusive Bluestocking Q&A with producer Elizabeth Karlsen and Ian McEwan’s editor Dan Franklin.
The drama centers on a young couple of drastically different backgrounds in the summer of 1962. Following the pair through their idyllic courtship, the film explores sex and the societal pressure that can accompany physical intimacy, leading to an awkward and fateful wedding night.
The book has been described as “heavenly” (Marie Claire), “a masterpiece” (the TLS) and "devastating" (Independent on Sunday), so we’ve been waiting for this new adaptation with bated breath. And the film, which won’t be released in cinemas until the following day, has already been generating significant buzz: Variety has called it “lyrical and rapturous”, while the Guardian has described it as “tender and valuable”. Directed by Dominic Cooke and starring Saoirse Ronan, Billy Howle, Anne-Marie Duff, Adrian Scarborough, Emily Watson and Samuel West, it’s definitely not one to be missed.
The Bluestocking Club merges book and film club, hosting evening screenings of literary adaptations introduced by writers, with cocktails and chat!
